Clark County Board of Supervisors Hears Update on Emergency Communication System Upgrade, Part 1

Thursday, November 13th, 2014 -- 12:08 PM

-The Clark County Board of Supervisors heard an update on the county's Emergency Communication System Upgrade.

Clark County Emergency Management Director John Ross started out by talking about the steps already taken in the project which included two studies, the formation of a sub-committee and a resolution that was passed by the board allowing the project to proceed pending an approved financing plan.

John then informed the board of some immediate concerns the county faces. The biggest one was that TDS informed the county that their Emergency 911 Services will end effective January 2016 and they will no longer be able to provide replacement parts for their equipment either. Their current equipment has also experienced a lot of failures and the county will now have to replace the equipment and find a new provider before January of 2016.

Some other immediate concerns include Motorola ending their support of the Voice Radio System in 2017 and their support on the Dispatch Radio Consoles has ended already. Also, the county still has gaps in pager and radio coverage. John also indicated that operational complexity, or the need to switch between multiple channels and towers, is still a concern and they have had equipment fail at the tower sites including the equipment on our station's tower.

If the equipment fails, it may be difficult for the county to repair it and the timelines to complete the project are already falling behind which will cause difficulties in completing the project by the anticipated deadlines.
