Neillsville Finance Committee Prepares 2015 Budget, Fire Department

Thursday, October 16th, 2014 -- 8:59 AM

-The Neillsville Finance Committee has been meeting for the past week to create the 2015 budget for the city.

During a Finance Committee meeting held on October 6th, the committee heard the budget for the Fire Department Administration. All-in-all, their budget was mostly in line with last year, but there was a slight increase from 2014's $252,884 compared to 2015's $253,184. The increase was attributed to a slight increase in the retirement line of the budget which is required by state law. The rural share of that amount comes to $25,970, making the city's share $227,214.

Neillsville Fire Chief Matt Meyer also talked about the department's two pumper trucks. He said that the city should consider replacing the older of the two, one is a 1978 and the other is a 1995, as its 36 years old and beginning to wear out. A new fire truck would be in the price range of $250,000-$300,000.

Chief Meyer also said that they may need to look into a new rescue van as the current 1993 van is beginning to nickel and dime them. This van hauls the guys to the fire because only two men can fit in the truck and ten are required to man a call properly. The cost of a new van ranges from $200,000-$250,000.

A public hearing for the budget will be held during the first common council meeting in November.
