Clark County Health Department Offering Flu Clinics, Final

Monday, September 29th, 2014 -- 9:35 AM

-The Clark County Health Department is going to be offering flu clinics throughout the county.

Brittany Mews of the Clark County Health Department talked about who should get a flu shot based on a recommendation by the CDC.

Brittany said, "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, recommends everyone 6 months of age and older to get a yearly influenza vaccine, unless they have had a severe allergic reaction to a flu vaccine in the past. Influenza is a contagious disease caused by influenza viruses that infect the respiratory tract including the nose, throat, and lungs."

Brittany also stressed that you can?t get the flu by getting a flu shot.

"You cannot catch the flu from the flu vaccine," Brittany said. "The flu vaccines that are given by needle are made with viruses that are killed or inactivated. The viruses used to develop a nasal spray flu vaccine are alive, but they're weakened. Immunization is the best preventative measure to protect against illness."

The flu clinics are being held at the Clark County Health Care Center in Owen on Monday, October 20th from 2:00pm-6:30pm; the Abbotsford Elementary School on Tuesday, October 21st from 3:30pm-6:00pm; the Loyal Elementary School on Thursday, October 23rd from 3:30pm-6:00pm; the Greenwood High School on Monday, October 27th from 3:30pm-6:00pm; and the Neillsville High School on Thursday, October 30th from 3:30-6:00pm.

The clinics are free for children 18-years of age and younger. Adults can receive a flu shot at the clinic as well with the cost being $30 with most insurance providers accepted.
