Neillsville's Homecoming September 29th-October 3rd, Part 2

Friday, September 26th, 2014 -- 11:21 AM

-Next week is Homecoming week for the School District of Neillsville.

In the past, Neillsville has had issues with toilet papering and other non-school sponsored activities that take place during the week of Homecoming. The Neillsville School Board and District have taken a stance on the matter, saying that activities may be taken away if the behavior gets out of control.

I asked Neillsville Middle/High School Principal Craig Anderson if that will be the case this year and he informed me that it will.

Mr. Anderson said, "This is a new year. And we've tried to do a lot of self educating up here at the high school with our student body. But, Homecoming is one of those things, regardless of how old you are, you can probable think back to, hey, when I was in 9th-12th grade this is what we did. And I'm not so naive to think that we're not going to have some of those things going on. I would be guilty myself of toilet papering during Homecoming week when I was at that age."

"But, I guess really what we want our kids and the community to understand is we don't hand out toilet paper to kids. We don't give them addresses of people and say, hey, go here."

"I think there is a smart way to go about enjoying the week of Homecoming for our high school kids. First and foremost, we want them to be involved in as many school sponsored activities as possible. And if they are going to do things outside of the normal school day, be safe, be responsible and show some respect for those folks in our community that don't have school aged kids."

"As far as the toilet papering goes, I hope that our kids would simply go to peoples homes that they know. Every year we get phone calls in the high school office from community members. Some elderly, some with nobody in the school that they know. And they have complained about property being damaged and it makes a mess and some of those folks are not physically able to get out in their own yards and pick it up."

"So, we do understand those concerns and hopefully, this year, we'll have a bit more cooperation from our kids."

Mr. Anderson also said that there are students putting groups together to help with the clean-up if the toilet papering gets out of control.

Once again Homecoming runs the week of September 29th-October 3rd with a lot of fun, school sponsored activities planned.
