Owen-Withee School Board Discusses Drivers Ed Program

Thursday, September 11th, 2014 -- 10:24 AM

-The Owen-Withee School Board discussed the district?s Driver Education Program at their meeting on Monday.

The board reviewed data provided by District Administrator Bob Houts regarding their present Drivers Ed Program and what area districts are doing. Currently, Owen-Withee offers the classroom portion during their summer school program to 15-20 students. They are reimbursed through their summer school which more than pays for the course.

The district?s behind-the-wheel portion costs each student $150. This does not cover the whole cost, but coupled with the money the district takes in from the classroom portion; the district breaks just about even with the program.

Three of Clark County?s area schools do the same thing Owen-Withee does with summer school. Their behind-the-wheel cost to students varies from $200 to $300. Three Clark County schools do not offer drivers education at all, but leave this up to the individual student. They do allow a private company to come in and offer the program to their students.

The reason the board brought up this discussion is because the district?s Driver?s Ed vehicle is aging and will need replacing soon if the District wishes to continue their program. This expense will increase the cost to the District.
