Sunday, August 24th, 2014 -- 9:08 AM

-An Army paratrooper who was born in central Wisconsin has died while serving in Afghanistan.

Sgt. First Class Matthew Leggett served with the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. 39-year-old Leggett was born in Wisconsin Rapids and still has extended family in the area.

Cousin Jerry Leggett says Matthew's father grew up in Nekoosa and also had a career in the military. He now lives in Texas.

The Department of Defense says Leggett enlisted in the Army in May 1995 and had been based at Fort Bragg since 2012. He served three combat tours and was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations, including a Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat.
