Just in Time for the Clark County Fair, 4-H Celebrates 100 Years, Part 3

Thursday, August 7th, 2014 -- 10:45 AM

-The Clark County Fair is going on and the Clark County 4-H is a big part of the fair.

The 4-H program is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. I spoke with three Neillsville 4-H members, Luke Meyer, Jenna Byrne and Katie Meyer, and they talked about why they think 4-H is a great program.

Katie said, "It helps you step into a different leadership roles so you're ready for other clubs like FFA."

Luke said, "It gives people advantages that some people don't have, like farming."

I spoke with Melissa Kono, the CNRED Agent for Clark County and Interim 4-H Advisor, and she talked about why she thinks the 4-H program is a great program.

"It teaches life skills," said Melissa. "Whether it's time management or responsibility; whether or caring for animals or working on another type of project, that's life skills. Cooking and canning as well, which is the typical things I think people think of with 4-H, but certainly not limited to that. Good sportsmanship, I think, can never be underestimated. I think there's this natural progression too, in 4-H, where you start off and you certainly have good examples in your leaders, but also the older kids. I noticed as I went through 4-H, as an older kid in 4-H, you just kinda have to step up and assume this junior leader role when you're helping the younger kids. That teaches you so much too."

The Clark County Fair starts today and runs through Sunday the 10th.
