Wisconsin Accepting Bids to Self-Insure Over 200,000 State Employees

Thursday, May 29th, 2014 -- 9:42 AM

-Wisconsin is accepting bids in a renewed effort to self-insure more than 200,000 state employees who receive health insurance through the Department of Employee Trust Funds.

That would be a switch from the HMO plan that's been used in Wisconsin since 1984.

The state currently buys insurance from 18 companies for its employees and their family members. Self-insuring employees could save the state as much as $20 million but could also cost it more than $100 million, according to reports from the consulting firm Deloitte.

The state considered changing health care options in October before backing off.

The Department of Employee Trust Funds said Friday it will accept bids over the summer and could issue a two-year contract in September.
