Public Works Report at Owen City Council

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014 -- 1:09 PM

-The Owen City Council heard the Public Works Report during their meeting on Tuesday of last week.

Public Works Director Gary Smith reported the whirl at the Mill Pond Park was destroyed during snow removal this winter. An insurance claim has been submitted. He also said the air break tower at the STP was plugged by some fittings dropped inside it and the Withee metering station was struck by lightning early Sunday morning. Repairs are being done and an insurance claim has been submitted.

A quote of $2,600 was received for inspection of Owen?s water reservoir which came in under the budget of $4,500 and the culverts & installation for Willow Road will cost approximately $40,000, but it was noted that the project can be put out on bids if the Council desires. The County pays half with culvert aid.

The sidewalk on E. 5th Street was discussed to eliminate the south side sidewalk which is in poor shape and a resident on E. 5th Street has water standing in their backyard and they were wondering if the City can do anything about it. The land is owned by the railroad and Gary will talk to Keith and see if they can add a ditch to drain the water.

Finally, it was mentioned that a light pole on Central Avenue rusted at the bottom and fell down on Monday of last week, another light pole in front of Pippin?s was removed as well, the bathrooms at the Park are mostly not locked at night, the sewer main on Altenburg Avenue plugged early May 12th, and two residents had sewer backed up into their basement and Lehnen Street was questioned about repairing or patching.
