Neillsville Man Appears in Clark County Court for Sexual Assault Charges

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014 -- 7:40 AM

-A Neillsville man charged with sexual assault and incest appeared in Clark County Court on Monday for an initial appearance.

According to the criminal complaint, a 48-year-old Neillsville man began sexually assaulting a relative in the summer of 2007. The relative was just 12 years old at the time. The victim indicated that the assaults began more frequently after the first incident and continued until the age of 16.

The Neillsville man did plead not guilty to the charges against him. His lawyer argued for either a lower cash bail or very high signature bond. The Clark County Assistant District Attorney requested the bail to remain the same due to the seriousness of the crimes. The judge agreed and the man?s $50,000 cash bail remained the same.

At that point, the defendant and his attorney asked if it was possible for the man to put up his home as collateral for the bail. The judge said is hasn?t been done in the past 15 years, but they could request it. Also, during his appearance, the defendant said he?d like to post his bail so he could continue to help a family that recently left the Amish Community with a business they?re trying to start.

The man has been charged with four felonies: sexual assault of a child, incest, and two counts of repeated sexual assault of a child. If convicted and sentenced to the maximum amount, he could face 160 years in prison, a $400,000 fine or both.
