Marshfield Men Sentenced for the Death of a Marshfield Woman

Friday, May 16th, 2014 -- 4:36 PM

-Two Marshfield men were sentenced for their part in the death of a Marshfield woman.

Back in August of last year, police responded to a report of a woman that had passed away in her apartment. Syringes with heroin residue on them were found around the body of Kayla Vanderwyst and an autopsy found she died from a heroin overdose.

An investigation led to the arrest of Justin Drinka, age 23, and Trenton Blume, age 25, for allegedly supplying Vanderwyst with the drugs. Both men were charged with 1st degree reckless homicide and Drinka also had three burglary charges filed against him.

In the end the, Judge Greg Potter sentenced Drinka to a total of 10 years in prison, followed by 11 years of extended supervision. Blume was sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision. When both men were allowed to give a statement they apologized to Kayla?s family and expressed a desire to free themselves from the lifestyle they've chosen.

Judge Potter said one of the more disturbing aspects of the incident was the fact that neither man called 911 when they first noticed Kayla in distress, destroying what could have been a possible window of time to save her.
