Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday

Friday, May 9th, 2014 -- 1:23 PM

-Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers, who participate in the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive, the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

Led by letter carriers represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers, with help from rural letter carriers, other postal employees and other volunteers, the drive has delivered more than one billion pounds of food the past 20 years.

Lisa Schilling, the postmaster of Neillsville talked about when the food drive is and how people can donate.

Lisa said, "It is this Saturday, May 10th. And what we will be doing is, yesterday the bags went out, and you will put the food, the perishable items, in those bags. Hopefully it's not expired. And leave that by your mailbox and when we make your normal delivery, we will be stopping, grabbing that food and bringing it back to the post office where the volunteers sort it out."

She also mentioned what kind of items they?ll take and what they won?t take.

"The best stuff, of course, is the canned items," said Lisa. "Or the bigger jars of peanut butter. Anything that's plastic or in aluminum. The glass, we'd prefer not to have glass and, of course, as I mentioned, the expired stuff. And no alcohol of any kind too."

In case you can?t donate by leaving the food in a bag at your mailbox, there is a buggy in the lobby of the post office and you can drop your items off there. The food collected this weekend will stay with local food pantries as well.

Lisa is always amazed at the way the community comes together to donate.

Lisa said, "People have always been so generous in donating here. I've never been in a post office where the community comes together like this for a food drive. It is absolutely amazing! I give kudos to the local businesses even, like A&W, Subway, Pizza Hut, Cenex, Kwik Trip, Hardee's, IGA. They all donate stuff to our volunteers which is just amazing. All the other offices I've worked in, in all my 21 years, have never come together like this town does for this food drive."

Once again the food drive is this weekend, Saturday, May 10th.
