Wisconsin May Soon Join Minority of States that Don't Allow Online Voter Registration

Monday, April 28th, 2014 -- 12:59 PM

-Wisconsin may soon be in a minority of states that don't allow voters to register online.

The state has long been considered a model for its high turnout and election administration, but elections experts say it risks falling behind by sticking with dated methods of signing up voters.

Eighteen states have switched to online registration since 2002, and four more have approved it.

It would cost Wisconsin about $600,000 to make it possible for voters to complete registration online. But the Government Accountability Board says the state would save at least $1 million in the next decade after accounting for costs.

Some lawmakers in each party are interested in passing a bill next session to allow online registration, but Republicans can't agree on the issue.
