Records Show Tips About Online Sexual Exploitation of Children Increased While Investigations Languished

Monday, April 28th, 2014 -- 8:19 AM

-State records show that tips about the online sexual exploitation of children skyrocketed while investigations of such cases languished.

The number of tips the state received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children tripled between 2010-11 and 2011-12. But over that period the number of Department of Justice staff members assigned to investigate Internet crimes against children remained the same at 31.

A Department of Justice agent and her supervisor lost their jobs after an internal investigation found they let child pornography cases languish for months.

Attorney Dan Bach, who represents the former supervisor who's appealing his firing, says system-wide problems, including a ballooning caseload, led to months or years of inaction on cases involving child pornography, enticement and similar crimes.
