Spencer Special Olympics Basketball Game Fundraiser, Part 1

Thursday, March 20th, 2014 -- 2:41 PM

-This Sunday the Spencer Special Olympics is holding a fundraiser, to benefit their organization, with a basketball game between the Spencer Fire Department Firefighters and the Spencer Special Olympics Rockets.

I spoke with Mark Larson the very passionate coach for the Spencer Special Olympics Rockets and he told me how he got involved with the event.

Mark said, "This is the 2nd year that I've been involved with it. I realized that Spencer was part of the Colby agency at one point in time and they kinda got together and started this whole thing somewhere along the line. And I'm not even sure how many years they did it, but last year I took over the team and I brought some kids over from Marshfield. And so I got involved with the Spencer group and put the team together and they wanted to do the fundraiser."

There will be a concession stand open during the event and all the money raised will benefit the Spencer Special Olympics.

"The money goes to uniforms, shirts and everything else for all of the sports at Special Olympics at Spencer, not just basketball," Mark said. "They just choose basketball because it's an indoor sport. [Laughing] You can't do too much track stuff or any of that in this kind of weather. That's really where most of it goes, for anything they need, sometimes some travel expenses."

The game is being held at the Spencer School?s main gym on Sunday, March 23rd. Doors open at 11:30 and the game starts at 12:30.
