Greenwood Sawmill Fire Ruled an Accident

Monday, March 17th, 2014 -- 8:23 AM

-The cause of a fire that occurred at a Greenwood sawmill Friday night has been ruled an accident.

The Greenwood Fire Department was called to Wolf?s Sawmill at 105 West Cannery Street around 7:45pm on Friday. When they arrived the building was already engulfed in smoke.

The Greenwood Fire Department had a hard time getting the water they needed to fight the fire as Cannery Street is a dead end and the hydrant could only support one pumper. They tried to get water from the Black River, but there wasn?t enough under the thick ice and they finally got the water from a pond, but by that time the building was gone.

Neillsville, Granton, Loyal, Spencer and Thorp all assisted Greenwood with water, but they ran out while fighting the blaze as well. Most of the water needed had to be shipped in as Greenwood?s water is low due to the frozen pipes issue all local cities are facing.

The fire was ruled accidental. Dan Wolf, the owner of the facility, said he was welding Thursday night in the mill. He believes that a hot ember must have caused the fire. There were no injuries reported and all the fire crews worked into the early morning hours on Saturday.
