Even With Warmer Temperatures, Cities Still Want Residents to Run Their Water

Friday, March 7th, 2014 -- 11:29 AM

-Even though we're starting to see a slight warm up with temperatures and some melting snow, many cities are still asking residents to keep their water running at all times.

Several municipalities have asked residents to turn on a cold water faucet and let it run a small, but constant stream of water to help keep pipes from freezing. The stream should be the size of a pencil lead. The bitter cold winter has forced frost deeper than most winters, wreaking havoc on the pipes. Some places have reported 6 to 8 feet of frost and it's still down there. It clings to the pipes and causes them to freeze or burst.

Granton, Greenwood, Abbotsford, Thorp, Augusta, Boyd, Medford, Merrillan, Fairchild, Cadott, Gilman, Taylor and Black River Falls have all asked their residents to continually run their water until further notice. The City of Neillsville has currently NOT ordered their residents to run their water. However, Neillsville, and other cities like Loyal and Owen, have asked homes that have a history of pipes freezing to trickle their water.

Frozen pipes and water main breaks has been such an issue this year that several cities, including Neillsville and Thorp, had water emergencies when several breaks happened at the same time, draining their towers and causing a boil water advisory to go into effect.
