New Law Gives You Less Time to Seek Damages if Your Car's a Lemon

Monday, March 3rd, 2014 -- 8:16 AM

-If the vehicle you just bought turns out to be a lemon you now have less time to seek damages from the manufacturer and you won't be able to sue for as much money.

New restrictions that went into effect Saturday apply to new vehicles on which the manufacturer has failed to repair a warranty-covered defect after making four attempts in one year.

Car owners previously had six years to sue the carmaker, and they could seek double damages. Now they have three years, and they can only get actual damages.

Supporters say the previous law left too much room for abuse by consumers and lawyers. They say three years is enough time to file a lawsuit.

But opponents say the changes favor corporations over people.
