Neillsville Has Great Performance at Solo Ensembles

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014 -- 1:49 PM

-The Neillsville School District performed very well at Solo Ensembles held February 15th at the Owen-Withee High School.

Dawn Voss, who is very involved with the Neillsville Music Department, explained how the competition is run.

Dawn said, "This is a Cloverbelt Conference. So there are, I believe, seven schools in the conference. And they all go sing, sing duets, sing in large groups. They also go to play their musical instruments and they can do duets with their instruments and they can do large band groups too. And they go to be judged on their pieces and they can be judged with as low as a four or five. If they get a star, they go on to state!"

The students that advanced at Owen-Withee will be going to the state competition in May held in Eau Claire. Dawn said the students will be striving to receive that 1st place award.

"There they go to compete and, generally, they'll get a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th and, of course the highest being 1st, and that's what most kids hope to get when they go," said Dawn.

Dawn couldn?t remember all those heading to state for chorus, but she said most that went to Owen-Withee are going to state.

"I know there is one from band going," said Dawn. "There are so many going from the Chorus Department, we have such a strong chorus department. I would hate to say names in case I missed someone, but I would say that a majority that went are going on to state. It's really good. We have a strong, strong Chorus Department."

Dawn informed me that if students pick out a difficult solo to sing, they can also do a theatrical performance and advanced to state for that. Congratulations to those state bound performers.
