Owen-Withee School Finalizes Old Business

Saturday, December 14th, 2013 -- 8:52 AM

Some final items of old business were tackled during the Owen-Withee School Board Meeting on Monday.

Two representatives have been registered for the WASB Convention as per new board policy. Because of the need for a male hotel room and a female hotel room, there is space for two more members to attend with the District only paying for the hotel and food. Kris Karaba and Paul Heggemeier expressed interest and are checking on their availability.

As for Owen-Withee?s referendum, after speaking with the County Clerks from Clark and Taylor Counties, it appears that there will not be a primary necessary on February 18th. This means that if the District wants to proceed with a February budget override referendum, they will be responsible for the cost. The Clerks estimate that cost to be about $5000. This is not a cost the Board is anxious to incur. The need for a primary will not be known until January 7th which is the filing deadline for candidates. If there is no need for a primary, the Board may revise its referendum resolution to move it to the April election.

The board also heard an update on Union Recertification elections. In mid-November the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned the contempt of court citation against the WERC commissioners for holding union recertification elections in school district. This means that recertification elections will be held across the state beginning November 29th and concluding December 19th. The two OWEA groups are in the process of holding their elections and will have an activity on December 11 to get their members to vote. Results will be available later in the month.
