Neillsville School Board Approves Bus Bid

Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 -- 10:44 AM

The Neillsville School Board approved the purchase of a new school bus at their meeting on Tuesday evening.

The board approved a bid from Mid-State Truck that came to $78,827 with a $2500 trade in for their old school bus.

However there was one condition, the bus had to have Goodyear Tires put on the vehicle due to their high quality and local community support. This brought up the cost slightly to $79,187. The district will receive the bus in the Spring of 2014 and it will be paid for during this fiscal year.

The board then began to discuss whether this bus would have seat belts and, if not, could it be fitted with seat belts? The board then brought up the conflicting studies regarding seat belts in school buses and the cost of outfitting a bus with belts.

To fit a bus with seat belts can cost anywhere from $10,000-$15,000 and they need to be replaced every 5 years regardless of their condition.
