Jackson County Man Charged for Accident Involving His 4-Year-Old Daughter

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013 -- 8:20 AM

-A Jackson County man has now been charged after an accident resulted in his 4-year-old daughter being shot.

At the end of August, the Jackson County Sherriff?s Department received a call from the Black River Falls Hospital about a little girl with a non-life threatening gunshot injury.

The incident involved two children, a brother and a sister from the Town of Alma in Jackson County. At the time, the 6-year-old boy said he found the gun in the house, dropped it, and it fired at the girl. The children?s father, 48-year-old Fred Maphis, was home at the time, but he wasn?t directly supervising them.

The boy later admitted that he had been aiming the gun at a spot past his sister?s shoulder, but he got too close to her face. He also said that his father had told him to lie to police about it.

Maphis has been charged with leaving a loaded firearm near a child and obstructing an officer.
