Jackson County Could Soon Be Home for Elk Herd

Friday, August 16th, 2013 -- 9:23 AM

-Jackson County residents may soon see elk roaming the forests in their area.

The DNR hopes to establish a second elk herd near Black River Falls.

Currently there are roughly 150 elk living in the Clam Lake area near Hayward, but the DNR would like to establish a herd of about 50 in Jackson County by 2015. Their population goal is 400.

After years of planning, and thanks to a donation from the Ho Chunk Nation, elk are close to being introduced into the Black River State Forest.

There would be economic benefits to having an elk herd in Jackson County. People wanting to see and hear the elk?s unique cry would provide extra money for area businesses.
