Clark County Board of Supervisors Passes New Ordinance

Wednesday, July 31st, 2013 -- 8:27 AM

-The Clark County Board of Supervisors approved a new ordinance at their meeting on Thursday of last week.

The ordinance was drafted in response to several issues the Clark County Treasurer is facing. Property owners in the county have built up large amounts of delinquent property taxes and costs over the years.

Under this ordinance, the county can now take legal action against those individuals. Kathy Brugger stated that the main issue they face is individuals are not paying for properties considered ?contaminated? or they are collecting rent from people living on the property, but still not paying the taxes. She said there are some individuals that try and give the property to Clark County so they don?t have to pay for it.

Some of the supervisors as well as some citizens thought this ordinance give the county too much power, especially seeing as the land is considered ?contaminated.?

However, Kathy said there are ways for them to get rid of the property and she, as well as most of the supervisors and citizens at the meeting, felt it wasn?t right for the taxpayers of the county to pay the bill themselves.

The Board of Supervisors first made a motion to make the reading of the ordinance the 2nd and 3rd, which passed 21-5. They then approved the ordinance 23-3.
