Walker Comments on National Surveillance Program

Sunday, July 28th, 2013 -- 8:37 AM

Gov. Scott Walker, on stage with other potential 2016 presidential candidates, said Thursday he did not see a shift toward libertarianism among grass roots Republicans over national surveillance programs.

Walker made the comments after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie made a forceful defense for the surveillance programs started by President George W. Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and continued by President Barack Obama. Christie?s comments were a pointed rebuke of politicians like U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, another potential Republican presidential candidate in 2016. On stage with Walker and Christie were Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who gathered for a Republican Governors Association retreat. Like the other governors on the stage, Walker remained silent when asked if they wanted to rule out a potential presidential run.

Walker gave the keynote address Friday at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver. Walker will host governors from around the country in Milwaukee next week at a bipartisan National Governors Association conference.
