Edgar Teen Appears in Court for Accident

Thursday, July 18th, 2013 -- 9:20 AM

-An Edgar teen appeared in Marathon County Court on Wednesday for an accident he caused that sent him and two of his friends to the hospital.

Back in May, 17-year-old Nathan Koller of Edgar was driving down County Highway M, northeast of Stratford, with two friends when he lost control of the vehicle. Speed and alcohol were factors in the incident and none of the teens were wearing a seatbelt.

Koller was airlifted to Ministry St. Joseph?s Hospital in Marshfield where he spent some time in a coma and had to have his broken back mended. His passengers, 18-year-old Cody Wallis of Marshfield and 18-year-old Kayla Burtch of Stratford were hospitalized for minor injuries.

Koller had five charges filed against him and they include operating left of the center line, drinking open intoxicants as a driver in a motor vehicle, reckless driving endangering safety, failure to keep a vehicle under control and failure to wear a safety belt. Koller is also facing preliminary charges of causing injury by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.

Koller did plead not guilty to the charges during his appearance on Wednesday. He?s currently free on a $5,000 signature bond and he?s not allowed to have any contact with his victims.

As for the two friends, Wallis faces a single traffic citation of failure to wear a seat belt and no charges have been filed against Burtch.
