Bird in Wood County Tested Positive for West Nile Virus

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013 -- 8:21 AM

-A bird has tested positive for West Nile virus in Wood County.

A dead blue jay found July 1st in Southern Wood County, is the first that tested positive in Wood County since surveillance began back in the early 2000?s.

There are things you can do in order to protect yourself from the virus. People should limit time spent outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. They should apply insect repellant to clothing and exposed skin.

People also should make sure window and door screens are in good repair to prevent mosquitoes from entering residences. Homeowners should make sure roof gutters and downspouts are draining properly. They should turn over wheelbarrows, wading pools and other similar items when not in use.

The majority of people who are infected with West Nile do not get sick. Those who do become ill experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle ache, rash and fatigue.
