2013 Great Year for Maple Syrup

Monday, June 17th, 2013 -- 8:13 AM

-After a devastating year in 2012, Wisconsin's maple syrup production came roaring back this past spring as the weather was more conducive for sap flow.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, USDA officials say 265,000 gallons of maple syrup was made between February and May, a huge increase from the 50,000 gallons boiled down in 2012.

The total number of taps increased from 600,000 last year to 740,000 in 2013. Yields were also up 31 percent from 0.195 gallons per tap last year to 0.308 gallons per tap this year.

In 2012, the average price Wisconsin maple syrup producers received was $46.60 per gallon, $10.30 more than in 2011.

The 2013 Wisconsin maple syrup season began on February 15, about 20 days later than last year, and closed on May 28. Last year, the season ended earlier on April 25.
