OSHA Fines Gilman Cheese Factory

Friday, June 14th, 2013 -- 8:09 AM

-A Gilman cheese factory received over $120,000 in fines due to safety violations.

The U.S. Department of Labor?s Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the Gilman Cheeses Corporation for 10 safety violations that totaled $126,700.

This investigation came about when a worker had two fingers amputated by an unguarded cheese packing and labeling machine. OSHA later found out that another worker had a similar accident in January of 2012.

The company also received several other violations including lack of an adequate eyewash station, using a flexible cord as permanent wiring, lack of an electrical safety program and others.

Because of the hazards and the willful violations cited, Gilman Cheese Corp. has been placed in OSHA?s Severe Violator Enforcement Program, which mandates targeted follow-up inspections to ensure compliance with the law.
