Marshfield Schools Face Budget Shortfall

Sunday, May 26th, 2013 -- 10:25 AM

The Marshfield School District is projecting a substantial deficit in next year?s budget.

The district foresees a $1.1 million deficit for the 2013-2014 school year. That number could decrease or increase depending on decisions made regarding the state budget for next year.

The district has sent out four nonrenewal notices to teachers and they will be reducing full time positions to part time as well as combining support staff positions.

The Marshfield District has expected this deficit. The district asked voters to approve a $2.5 million referendum which was actually $700,000 less than next year?s budget. The district?s overall budget is expected to be about $800,000 less than last year, as it is transitioning to the new $2.5 million referendum, which is $500,000 less than its previous one.

The district also is not going to see a $300,000 payment to help with early retiree benefits , which was a part of the Affordable Care Act passed by Congress in 2011.
