Early Entry for 2013-2014 School Year at Neillsville Denied During Monday School Board Meeting

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013 -- 8:54 AM

-An early entry for the 2013-2014 school year was denied at the Neillsville School Board Meeting on Monday.

The school board did deny early entry for a young girl to start 4K pre-school this year as opposed to next year. The Neillsville District has a policy that establishes a cutoff point of September 1st, stating that a child must be 4 at that time in order to start the school year.

The young girl in question would be 4, about 8 days after the cutoff point so her parents requested to have her start this fall rather than the fall of 2014. They felt she was responsible enough to do so and she had tested well in her current daycare/pre-school setting. They feared she would grow bored with school next year if she already knows the basics very well.

In the end the board did deny the entry as they had established the September 1st deadline for a reason and feared that continuing to bend that rule would only bring more requests to do so. They also felt the child would do just fine next year even if she has an edge on the basics compared to her classmates.

The decision to deny the request was not unanimous though, 2 board members voted to allow her to come this fall, while 3 said no.
