County Board Approves Land Purchase

Thursday, April 18th, 2013 -- 7:41 AM

-The Clark County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution that would allow the county to purchase new county land.

The county wants to purchase 924 acres of the Norwegian Creek Block appraised at 970,000 dollars. This land would provide forest products to the local economy, revenues for the county, outdoor recreation opportunities, and improve wildlife habitat, according to the Clark County Forestry and Parks Committee.

A small reason the county is buying this land, is because of the recent sale of other county land for cranberry bogs.

The money from that sale will be used to pay for this land and the county will then be eligible for the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant, which will match 50% of the value of the appraised land. However, if we don't get the grant, this resolution will be scrapped.

Several townships are in favor of the purchase, including the Town of Mead, as they would receive 800 dollars a year in revenue. There were some at the meeting that felt the money from the recent sale of county land should be used for other purposes, such as a new tower/repeater system for law enforcement.

In the end, the resolution was approved with 25 voting yes and 3 voting no. One individual was absent.
