Former Wisconsin Man Has Court Appearance for Arson and Tax Evasion

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013 -- 1:00 PM

-A former Wisconsin man made a court appearance in Jackson County for arson and tax evasion.

Brian Adkins, age 40, of Las Vegas, Nevada and formerly of Albion, Wisconsin, is accused of hiring someone to burn down the Rustic Mill Tavern, which he owned, in order to collect the insurance money.

Adkins is also accused of collecting and failing to pay state and county sales taxes totaling over 24 thousand dollars and collecting and failing to pay over 7,000 dollars in state withholding taxes.

Adkins has several charges filed against him. They include arson of a building, three counts of failing to file income tax return, four counts of theft of moveable property in various amounts, resisting or obstructing an officer, and making a fraudulent insurance claim.

During the initial appearance on Monday, the judge ordered Adkins to not have any contact with the two individuals he hired to burn down the Rustic Mill Tavern. Future court dates were set for May and June.

If convicted on all the tax counts, Adkins could face up to 23 years in prison and $70,000 in fines. If convicted on all charges, Adkins could face up to 68 years in prison and $190,000 in fines, or both.
