DNR Says Refrain From Burning

Sunday, April 14th, 2013 -- 6:44 AM

State environmental and forestry officials are urging homeowners to refrain from openly burning trash and yard debris.

People can obtain burning permits from the Department of Natural Resources, but agency is trying to discourage the practice. DNR forestry specialists say debris burning causes about 30 percent of Wisconsin wildfires each year. The agency's pollution experts warn open burning can produce a variety of hazardous air contaminants, including arsenic, benzene and formaldehyde.

They suggest homeowners turn to community recycling programs and composting as alternatives to burning.
