Your Old Car Battery May Be Worth More

Saturday, April 6th, 2013 -- 8:23 AM

People who buy a car battery and don't turn in the old one may lose a few bucks more in the future.

A bill introduced by state Sen. Chris Larson would remove the $5 cap on deposits that retailers can charge when they sell automotive or other lead acid batteries.

Larson says the $5 limit doesn't really encourage people to return their used battery.

That winds up hurting retailers because they pay manufacturers more than $15 deposit on each one.

The bill has bipartisan support in the Legislature. A similar proposal failed last year in the Assembly.
