Wisconsin Department of Justice Handles More Background Checks

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013 -- 8:40 AM

-The Wisconsin Department of Justice handled nearly 50,000 more background checks related to handgun purchases in 2012 than it did the year before, forcing the agency to add workers to meet the demand as gun sales continued to soar, new figures show.

For 2012, the state handled 138,164 handgun background check calls, an increase of more than 49,000 - or 55% - over 2011.

So many calls were coming in that the DOJ had to add extra people to keep up with the workload, Dana Brueck, communications officer for the agency, said in an email.

The state numbers reflect a trend of soaring gun sales in the U.S., with manufacturers barely able to keep up with demand.

The number of firearms-related background checks conducted nationally by the FBI also set a record in 2012. And, the FBI conducted nearly 2.8 million background checks in December alone, more than any other month since the agency began keeping track of the background checks in November 1998.
