Superstorm Sandy Increases Need for Blood Donations

Monday, November 12th, 2012 -- 8:31 AM

-It?s always important to donate blood for those in need, but with the recent storm that hit the east, donation is more important than ever.

Bonita Leitza, of the Red Cross, said Superstorm Sandy has caused many problems for the Red Cross and blood supplies.

?They had to cancel 380 blood drives in a 13 state area when the storm hit,? Bonita said. ?Because of that 12,800 fusions were potentially lost.?

The Red Cross is asking all those holding blood drives to do even better than the quota that they're given. ?They need to try and get at least 600 pints at every blood drive to try and get back to normal. We need to try and meet our goal and then do a little better,? Bonita continued.

Bonita said that Neillsville always does very well when it comes to donations for blood drives, but she encourages all those that are able to come out and donate to help remedy this unique situation.

Some upcoming area blood drives include the American Legion here in Neillsville on Monday the 12th from 11am to 6pm. There will be another on Tuesday the 13th at the Thorp Fire and Ambulance District Station from 12pm to 6pm.

Finally, you can donate on the 14th in Jackson County at the Lincoln High School in Alma Center from 11am to 5pm.
