51 People Die in October Traffic Crashes

-Last month, 51 people died in 47 Wisconsin traffic crashes, which made it the third safest month of October in terms of traffic deaths since World War II, according to preliminary statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The safest month of October since World War II occurred in 2009 with 39 traffic deaths, and the deadliest October was in 1971 with 127 fatalities.

Traffic fatalities last month were four fewer than October 2011 and two fewer than the five-year average for the month of October.

As of the end of October, 531 people have died in 470 Wisconsin traffic crashes, including 100 motorcycle drivers, 13 motorcycle passengers, 36 pedestrians and nine bicyclists.

Traffic deaths through October were 69 more than during the same period in 2011, which is approximately a 15 percent increase, and 26 more than the five-year average.
