Van Halen/Roth Tour Updates
Thursday, January 25, 2007
    from melodicrock.com

    VAN HALEN - VARIOUS UPDATES:

Van Halen fans will have no doubt seen today's Billboard.com update, confirming the band's plans to tour this US summer with original vocalist David Lee Roth. I checked in with my source for anything extra, but first - Billboard stated: "Sources tell Billboard.com a contract could be signed as soon as today for Live Nation to produce a 40-date amphitheatre tour by Van Halen this summer, with original frontman David Lee Roth back in the fold for the first time in more than 20 years..."
Nice to see that we are getting close now to what was a news story started late last year. There has been a lot of talk between the camps and my source informs me that a deal has been negotiated and yes, this is definitely happening despite bumps in the road on the way to getting the tour signed, sealed and delivered.
Still no mention of new material featuring Roth - it was said to me from the outset that new material was NOT part of this deal and I'm yet to hear anything different.

In additional news - it seems the Hall Of Fame ceremony will be broadcast on VH1 after all and look for an article on the band's induction in the next Rolling Stone magazine.
Speaking of Rolling Stone - this from their website today: "The reunion that Van Halen fans have been awaiting for twenty-two years began in December, when David Lee Roth walked into Eddie Van Halen's Hollywood home studio. There he rejoined the band for a rehearsal, singing fourteen Van Halen classics. "They totally got along on a personal level," a source close to the reunion says. "And it sounded great." At press time, Roth and the band were negotiating a deal for a major summer tour, which would be Van Halen's first Roth-fronted tour since 1984. Along with a possible Police reunion, it would likely be among the year's biggest box-office draws.
"Everything is up in the air," Eddie Van Halen tells Rolling Stone. "We don't want to say anything prematurely." He suggested that the band is waiting on Roth: "People know where we are and that we're making music. Whoever wants to come up can join us — they're welcome." But the famously contentious group may already be having communication problems. The source replies, "Dave is ready. He's been ready."
Eddie's comments here are obviously a little out of date - while the guys (Ed, Al & Wolfgang) have been continuing to rehearse (without Roth), the deal is definitely done for the 2007 tour.

And in related news, there is a rumor that the David Lee Roth Band will hit the road for some spring dates. I await word to confirm this, but if so, consider the shows as a warm up for the main event!

More on the new RUSH...

    from blabbermouth.net

RUSH's Rumored Working Album Title: 'Snakes And Arrows' - Jan. 15, 2007

According to a posting on the RUSH fan site Power Windows, current rumors suggest that RUSH's forthcoming album will be titled either "Snakes and Arrows" or "Snakes and Ladders".

RUSH is nearly finished recording its next studio album, which is expected later this year via Atlantic. The tracks were put to tape at Allaire Studios in upstate New York with co-producer Nick Raskulinecz. "I have never enjoyed the recording process so much, nor been so satisfied with the results," Peart wrote last month on his web site.

Peart previously told Billboard.com some of his lyrics for the new songs were inspired by his motorcycle journeys throughout the United States, chronicled in the recent book "Roadshow: Landscape with Drums".

"Just seeing the power of evangelical Christianity and contrasting that with the power of fundamentalist religion all over the world in its different forms had a big effect on me," he said.

Hagar talks Van Halen...
Thursday, January 11, 2007
    From melodicrock.com

SAMMY HAGAR TALKS HALL OF FAME:
More comments floating around following Van Halen getting the nod for the Hall Of Fame. First - Billboard.com reports:
Gary Graff, Detroit / Van Halen's appearance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on March 12 "could go a lot of different ways," according to Sammy Hagar. That said, Hagar -- the group's second frontman, from 1985-96 -- tells Billboard.com he has high hopes that the famously combative group will take the high road on that particular night.
"My hope is that everyone lets everything go and we go there in complete respect of each other and in a loving way, with the attitude that 'I couldn't have done it without you' towards everybody," says Hagar, who received the official word of Van Halen's selection at his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Mexico, where he and Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony have spent the past week jamming with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith in a newly developing side project called Chickenfoot.
But he also notes that, "The biggest fear for me is there'll be animosity and 'I won't talk to that guy' and maybe some harsh words towards each other or some sly remarks in speeches ... and it's not out of the question that that could happen. But in the end, no matter what happens, when you hear the music you're gonna go, 'That's one of the greatest rock'n'roll bands in the world, ever, and well-deserved the inauguration into the Hall of Fame."
Hagar says he hadn't spoken to anyone other than Anthony about the induction but planned to put in a congratulatory call to drummer Alex Van Halen. He expects that manager Irving Azoff "is gonna try to spin everyone together somehow" and says he'll "go with the flow" with induction ceremony plans, which Hagar expects will include a live Van Halen performance.
However, Hagar deemed talk of a Van Halen tour this year with original frontman David Lee Roth and guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 15-year-old son Wolfgang on bass speculative and voiced concern for that particular turn in the band's course.
"Wolfie's a great guy; I love Wolfie. But I don't think Van Halen should bring a 15-year-old kid to replace Sam, Dave and Michael Anthony," Hagar says. "That's a lot of pressure for Wolfie. Just 'cause he's Eddie's son doesn't mean he can go out and play in arenas and perform and entertain an audience for two hours. I would love to see Eddie and Alex get behind Wolfie, with a kid of his age singing, and produce the record for him and help him launch a career. I'd rather see it go that way than come out and say 'Wolfie's the bass player in Van Halen and maybe singing, too.' Van Halen's got way too much history to have that put on him."

And another very cool little interview (again) with Sammy Hagar - who seems to be doing most of the talking about this - can be read via Reuter's Journalist Deen Goodman's MySpace page at: www.myspace.com/deangoodman
Some nice comments and kind words there from Sammy.

Boston - possible tour and new music...

    from melodicrock.com

BOSTON LEADER THINKING ABOUT MAJOR TOUR, NEW MUSIC:

Press Article / Launch Radio Networks has issued the following report from Bruce Simon:
Boston leader Tom Scholz has been working on material for a new album for years - but since he has a habit of working on albums for up to eight years, nobody is expecting a release anytime soon.
However, fans will hopefully be able to see the band perform next year, as Scholz told us: "We would like to go out on the road next year and do a huge tour. We'll probably be doing a lot of the older Boston songs, you know, if we get out next year, along with the songs from this new release that I'm planning."
Earlier this year Scholz personally remixed Boston's self-titled debut from 1976 and its follow-up, 1978's Don't Look Back, for CD, greatly improving the sound.
[Word has it that he tour will still feature REO Speedwagon as opening act. REO will be supporting the release of their new studio album Happy Ending.]

The Police to possibly reunite...
Monday, January 08, 2007
    from melodicrock.com

    BILLBOARD TALKS POLICE REUNION:
I have no doubt most have already read one of the various news reports about the potential reunion of The Police - but justin case you haven't:
New York (Billboard) - Rumors are swirling that the Police will reunite for 2007 dates in England and the United States, which would be the rock trio's first since disbanding in 1986.
Sources told Billboard.com the reports - in the British press - were legitimate, but they would not publicly comment until final details are nearer to completion.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of "Roxanne," the single that broke the Police in the United States.
"Discussions have been underway as to how this will be commemorated," reads a post on Sting's Web site www.sting.com attributed to a spokesperson at the band's A&M Records label. "While we can confirm that there will indeed be something special done to mark the occasion, the depth of the band's involvement still remains undetermined."
Sources say in addition to DVD releases, A&M is planning another multi-disc collection in the vein of 1993's Message in a Box, which featured the band's complete studio recordings and a handful of rarities.
A Police reunion has been the concert industry's dream for two decades, as it is believed the band could play stadiums internationally should it choose to reunite. But besides an impromptu set at Sting's 1992 wedding to Trudie Styler, the Police's only other post-breakup performance was in celebration of its 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
And while Sting has repeatedly expressed reluctance at reuniting, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers have kept the flame alive. This summer, Summers told Billboard he was certain the group could have continued past its 1983 commercial peak with Synchronicity.
"The more rational approach would have been, 'OK, Sting, go make a solo record, and let's get back together in two or three years,' " he said. "I'm certain we could have done that. Of course we could have. We were definitely not in a creative dry space. We could have easily carried on, and we could probably still be there. That wasn't to be our fate. It went in another way. I regret we never paid it off with a last tour."
