Dio With Black Sabbath Again?
Thursday, September 28, 2006
from melodicrock.com
HEAVEN & HELL - BLISS FOR BLACK SABBATH FANS IN 2007:
Spanish website www.rafabasa.com has posted news of a Black Sabbath re-union of sorts - under a different name - Heaven & Hell. The line-up will apparently be comprised of Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Ronnie James Dio. The website reports that a tour is planned by the group starting mid-2007. How accurate is this information? Pretty damned good from what I have heard. In fact, I heard something to this effect back in June. While there is still nothing official being said, I can add a little more information: - Ronnie James Dio was apparently approached by another individual this year for a possible new collaboration, but turned them down due to a prior commitment to this project. - The project formed after Tony Iommi and Dio met to work on a couple of new tracks for a planned Black Sabbath box set The Dio Years. - The whole deal has been kept quiet to avoid any unpleasantries during this year's Ozzfest tour. I'm sure we will be hearing more about this! Stay tuned...

A Ton Of Rock News Today...
Tuesday, September 19, 2006
from melodicrock.com
YES, STILL MORE ROCKSTAR!: It's official! From Kissonline.com Paul Stanley's backing band for the Live To Win Tour will be the House Band from the CBS TV Show, Rock Star. The band appeared on the first season of the show - Rock Star Inxs, as well as this year's Rock Star Supernova. Comprised of Paul Mirkovich (Keyboards), Jim McGorman (Guitar), Rafael Moreira (Lead Guitar), Nate Morton (Drums) and Sasha Krivstov (Bass), the House Band is an eclectic, skilled group of professionals who know rock and roll. Earlier today Paul enthusiastically spoke about bringing the House Band on the road with him. "From the first time I saw them perform, I knew they were the band that could help deliver the songs for my solo tour with lethal force. Trust me; this is going to be awesome!" Paul told KOL.
I'm really trying to wrap up this RockStar coverage, but still it continues! Rumored for weeks - it is now confirmed news that Inxs have been dropped by SonyBMG for North America - quite a slap in the face for the band that have been touring successfully and who have also sold more than a reasonable number of records on the back of their 2005 RockStar: Inxs show. The band will still be alligned with Sony/BMG in Australia and I am yet to hear of any news out of Europe.
"The reconstituted Inxs has parted ways with Epic Records in North America, a source confirms to Billboard.com. The group roared back onto the charts last year with the album Switch, which featured new frontman JD Fortune. The artist was selected to replace the late Michael Hutchence on the first season of the CBS reality series "Rock Star." Switch has sold a respectable 375,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The single Pretty Vegas opened at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest debut of the band's career. Inxs remains signed to Sony BMG in its home country of Australia, where Switch was a massive hit. The group is presently on tour in Australia and has dates scheduled worldwide through Nov. 21 in Orlando, Fla. A handful of European shows have been postponed to allow guitarist Tim Farriss to undergo surgery for torn knee ligaments."
Why would any label drop a band that just sold 375,000 units for them??? That's insane! I also know for a fact the record sold 150,000 units in Canada. What else is going on?? Something smells folks...
Back to this year's show, the following singers have CDs out or on their way: Dilana - Wonder Fool - available overseas already, but being issued domestically inside the USA October 17. Ryan Star - Dark Horse - Featuring songs performed on the TV series, including the cool original Back Of Your Car. Star's all original release Songs From The Eye Of An Elephant can be purchased at: www.cdbaby.com/cd/rstar Patrice Pike has 3 CDs in release (and a guest spot on Rob Lamothe's current studio release) and will release her new album Unraveling, also on October 17.
TEXAS ROCKERS ZZ TOP SPLIT WITH MANAGER, LABEL:
From the Los Angeles Times / By Dean Goodman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Texas rock trio ZZ Top has parted ways with the manager who helped form the band in 1969, according to a statement issued on Sunday. In addition to splitting with Bill Ham, the band has also ended its tenure at RCA Records, 14 years after signing a five-album contract reportedly worth $30 million. ZZ Top's most recent album, Mescalero, spent just three weeks on the Billboard 200 in 2003. Its stint at RCA, beginning with 1994's Antenna, failed to match its run at Warner Bros. Records, where it recorded the biggest hit of its career, 1983's Eliminator. ZZ Top -- comprised of singer/guitarist Billy Gibbons, singer/bass player Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard -- last toured in 2005, ending a trek dominated by casinos and state fairs at New York's Beacon Theater in November. "Upcoming plans for the band will be announced in the near future," the statement said. The band is due to receive an honor from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in November, a spokesman said. Ham, the president of Austin, Texas-based Lone Wolf Management, first partnered with Gibbons in the late 1960s. The former record promoter helped Gibbons put together ZZ Top, which settled on its current lineup in late 1969. According to former roadie David Blayney's 1994 memoir "Sharp Dressed Men," Ham "coupled a Col. Tom Parker managerial savvy with a Rambo approach to life and a Marquis de Sade style of doing business, which would soon make him famous in the music industry." Specializing in Texas blues boogie, the band issued its debut release, "ZZ Top's First Album," in 1970. Amid constant touring, it broke through with 1973's "Tres Hombres," featuring the classic-rock radio staple "La Grange." Pop success beckoned with Eliminator, which sold millions and propelled the band to stadium status, thanks to slick videos for tunes like Gimme All Your Lovin' and Legs, featuring pretty women and souped-up cars. "For nearly four decades we have made music history together," Ham said in a statement. "Lone Wolf will always be grateful for the overwhelming loyalty and support from fans around the world, the labels, the promoters, the agencies, the vendors, the media, and so many others who helped make this possible. We wish the band all the best for continued success."
MICHAEL SCHENKER QUITS PLAYING?:
There has been some talk about Michael Schenker in recent weeks. Most of it centering around his 'colourful' website posts and questions about his mental state. That speculation heightened last week when the content of Michael's website was removed, leaving only an upside-down MSG logo on display. UK journo Dave Ling posted this update to his website diary, which I thought was worth passing on here - www.daveling.co.uk/diary.htm "The living soap opera that is Michael Schenker once again excels himself. Last week Michael announced that MSG's US tour was cancelled due to (and I'm quoting the statement directly) "serious familiar problems of MSG singer Jari Tiura". Over the past weekend the band's UK booking agent emailed me with the news that the band's British shows were also being pulled. Now via Michael's all-too-intimate website we learn that the fracas with Tiura has become the straw to break the camel's back, apparently forcing Herr Schenker to "quit playing" for good. "I'm tired of changing musicians and singers," writes Michael in a response to an email from his latest ex-employee. "MSG is finished and I am not inspired [to play music] anymore". As we all know, Schenker is a Jedi Master when it comes to crying wolf, and I'm pretty sure that's what he's doing again here. Let's hope so anyway..."
HENRY LEE SUMMER ARRESTED FOR DUI:
Oh Henry! From: Fox 59 News "Residents of Country Wood Estates Mobile Home Park had quite a bit of excitement when a man driving a silver Ford Explorer drove recklessly through their neighborhood. "As soon as he pulled in he was sideways in here. Then he turned around and took off, hitting all the cars." Witnesses say the man struck six vehicles. But the excitement didn't end there. The driver ran into this mobile home where neighbors trapped him so he wouldn't leave before sheriff deputies arrived. At that point, Amanda Johnson realized the man standing on her porch was in serious trouble, who also happens to be Henry Lee Summer. "He's a singer that used to be platinum three years in a row. How do you know him? He's my cousin. That's probably why he was coming here. He was probably coming to lay down or something like that." Henry Lee Summer of Brazil, Indiana is a rock and roll singer who released most of his albums during the eighties. His first single was Sweet Love. But now you can say he's hit a bad note, facing several charges including DUI, failure to stop at a property damage, and resisting arrest. Major Larry Jahnke, Marion Co. Sheriff Dept. "He did fight actively with the officer and he was tazed during the incident." Officers are now waiting on blood work to determine Summer's alcohol level. They will also find out if he had been using drugs.

Rockstar Superwhatever???
from melodicrock.com:
Tommy Lee's 'Supernova' Takes New Name By Steve Gorman / Reuters
Los Angeles (Reuters) - Forced by court order to change its name, a made-for-TV rock band featuring Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee made its commercial music debut Thursday as Rock Star: Supernova -- the title of the CBS show that spawned it. The new group, which also includes former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and onetime Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, originally had planned to call itself simply Supernova. But a lesser-known band that has claimed that name for 17 years filed a trademark infringement suit last month, and a federal judge in San Diego this week ordered Lee's band to find another name pending the outcome of the case. Thus, a day after Toronto native Lukas Rossi was plucked from obscurity and crowned the band's lead singer on the finale of "Rock Star: Supernova," the quartet issued its first two singles under its lengthier, somewhat awkward, new moniker. "It's going to be Rock Star: Supernova. That's their actual name," said Natalie Geday-Sorem, a spokeswoman for the group's label, Epic Records. The first two songs -- It's All Love and Be Yourself & 5 Other Cliches -- were made available for digital download from the online music store Yahoo! Music Unlimited (www.music.yahoo.com). Epic Records plans to release the group's debut album on Nov. 21, with the foursome slated to launch a 28-city North American tour in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve. Geday-Sorem added that the label, a unit of Sony BMG Entertainment, was counting on more than just one album and tour from the band. "It's a permanent thing," she told Reuters. "Once they get off their tour, they're going to go right back into the studio and start to write more material."

Van Halen/Roth Reunion?
Wednesday, September 13, 2006
from melodicrock.com
EDDIE VAN HALEN SPEAKS TO HOWARD STERN: A busy weekend as far as rock n roll news. The biggest news I guess is a rare radio appearance by Eddie Van Halen, phoning into the Howard Stern show to update listeners on everything Eddie. I haven't heard the interview myself, but if I get audio of it, I'll post here. The champs at VHLinks.com have a detailed conversation thread going about the interview
It seems Ed was his usual entertaining self on the phone - his comments definitely giving fans an indication on where Van Halen goes from here (if anywhere). Highlights of the interview incude: - Eddie calling Sammy and Mike's Other Half a 'cover band'. - Stating that Van Halen is now himself, Alex and son Wolfgang. Anthony can 'do whatever he wants...' - Stating that he was open to working / touring with David Lee Roth but any involvement with Michael Anthony seems all but impossible. - Talked about his music in the adult film calling it a 'struggle between good and evil'. - Smoking didn't cause him cancer, it was the use of metal picks, which he always had in his mouth. - Next release will be a solo album or project with Alex and Wolfgang. - Called Hagar 'Little Red Rocker' and 'Little Red Worm') and Michael Anthony 'Hot Sauce Sobileski'. - Also talked of investing in a cancer center (something management told me in 2004...a substantial amount of money from all reports).

PACKER'S OFF TO EXPECTED START
About the only thing unexpected about Sunday's 26-0 opening debacle was the surprisingly strong performance of Ahman Green.
Am I the only one that has zero faith in Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy?? McCarthy resembles Fred Flinstone in a disturbing way. The only word that pops to mind when I see him is "dumb"... well, "dumb" or "Fritos".
What do you think... can the Pack possibly do better than 4-12 this year??

Rockstar Supernova...And The Winner is...?
Friday, September 01, 2006
From melodicrock.com
TALKING ROCKSTAR:An interesting week for those involved in RockStar: Supernova. The main issue involves an online press report stating that the winner of the show was predetermined and then naming them (see below). Show co-host Dave Navarro is busiest trying to put out the fire, helped by the fact that the leak comes from a completely crap source (The entirely unreliable World Entertainment News Network). So why bother mentioning it here? Funnily enough - I heard the same rumor about 6 weeks back. Two other things worth mentioning before getting into Dave's comeback. First of all, the same rumor was circulating last year about Mig. He ended up coming third. But earlier in this season a friend of mine said they were chatting with JD Fortune, who claimed to him then, that he knew he was in before the show started. So who knows what to believe! Do not read on if you do not want any possible spoilers... This is the online report circulating: "(Spoiler alert!) Veteran Hollywood gossip columnist Janet Charlton insists she knows who has won reality talent competition Rock Star: Supernova, and has revealed the winner's name on her website. Although the show is live and the winner won't be officially announced until September 13, Charlton claims to have inside information on who will ultimately be named the new lead singer for the band Supernova. (Warning: spoilers after the jump!) The series follows the search for a vocalist to join the new band, formed by Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and one-time Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilbey Clarke. Charlton says the band had the most clout when it came choosing the winner in the competition because they will have to go on the road with them. She claims contestant Lukas Rossi was selected because band members thought he would be the best fit and, barring any unforeseen events, he will be named the winner in the series finale next month." Here's what Dave Navarro had to say on the matter: "Damn there are some funny rumors around regarding the show. First of all, I don't know who Janet Charlton is, but I do know who she isn't. She aint no Perez Hilton, that's for sure. At least with Perez, you get humor and the rumors are at least based in SOME fact. He leaves it up to the reader to do the dance between the two. As for Janet, she just kind of sees what sticks. Well, with Rockstar, she doesn't have a clue as to what she is talking about. If she has an inside source... Name it! Come on! I dare you! Name it! If you don't know what I am talking about... She has claimed that she knows who the winner is. Trust me... Nobody knows until it's over. In fact, if there is one thing I CAN share, it's that Supernova has yet to be on the same page with each other in terms of favorites and they are waiting to see if their ideas line up in the coming weeks based on the remaining performances. Very diplomatic and democratic style. As for the stuff about Storm being edged out through our comments... That is just stupid. Don't forget that no matter what happens, the band can throw out whoever they want for whatever reason they want. They can also save whoever they want. Hell, they don't even need reasons! It is true that the public vote shifts the game in a huge way and that Supernova considers the results every week, but there is no reason for a conspiracy! Why would anyone try to conspire something that they ultimately control anyway? Just doesn't make sense. These guys are busy writing and rehearsing, not to mention that Tommy is still doing Crue stuff on our days off. They don't have time to come up with a "master plan". The remaining six are all good and tomorrow's elimination is bound to be heart-breaking for some! Each singer has a pretty solid fan base at this point. Tonight is the night, if ever there was one, to VOTE!!! I can't wait to see what kind of shit I get on this blog after the show. Since I am already at the tapings, my game has become reading all of your thoughts after each show airs. Remember The views and opinions expressed in this page and on the couch are strictly those of the page author. The contents of this page have not been reviewed or approved by CBS, MBP or Supernova. Awwww hell yeah!"
What happens now for the show? Business as usual obviously...you'll never hear anyone comment about this on the show. But all along I have clamed that Lukas is the most likely winner as his character follows the 'script' of the show and what happened last year. I still believe the guys will still pick Lukas as the winner - adverse publicity aside. I really don't rate him as a good vocalist at all. In fact I don't really rate any of these singers as people that will have lasting careers, Lukas might just be the best fit for the band. What does it matter anyway - there will only ever be one album and one tour!
What happened this week on the show? It was ok...it was largely entertaining - as it is supposed to be - but nothing amazing as far as vocal performances. Lukas was pretty horrible...Storm struggled again with a song not tailored for her, but chosen for her by "fans" (idiots)...Toby was probably the best this week and maybe o the last couple of weeks. Although he tends to shout a much (they all shout too much), he was entertaining and his performance last week with Supernova hs been the best of the three originals showcased. On elimination night Lukas did his thing with Supernova - how utterly predictable that he was chosen tonight...that was a set plan I bet. I remain unimpressed with his voice qualities. It was another dubbed performance for the record...notice how the Supernova performances feature the vocalists holding the mike closer than normal to their mouth? Just in case the venue performance doesn't quite synch up with the over-dubbed studio vocal added before the show airs on TV. BTW - is it just me, or is the house band drummer far superior to Tommy Lee? In fact, is the house bnd in general bigger ass-kickers than Supernova? I hope Paul Stalney does take them on the road with him. So Ryan was booted off - no surprise after watching him shout his way through two performances this week. Brooke Burke should introduce the "rockers" each week as the best unsigned "shouters" on the planet. That would be far more accurate. So - next to go? The script should see Storm or Magni removed...I would have said Toby, but he has kicking it up a notch the last couple of weeks. Finishing in order: Storm, Magni, Toby, Dilana and winner Lukas. Let's see....2 weeks to go (thank God!)...
