The crazy world of Eddie Van Halen...Check this out from melodicrock.com...

EDDIE VAN HALEN SCORES ADULT FLICK AND JAMS AT PRIVATE FLOWER PARTY:
The world of Van Halen is never predictable, but this week it seemed to get even more bizarre. While Sammy Hagar slowly turns country, guitarist Eddie Van Halen has made a rare live appearance at the House Of Flowers (yes, flowers) while also penning new music for what seems to be an "artistic" adult movie!
Veteran adult movie director Michael Ninn has a new film out called Catherine and new Eddie Van Halen music is previewed on the film's website - two new instrumental's - Catherine and Rise.
Not only that, but Eddie has made a video for the song Catherine, appearing with a scantly clad young lass no less!

A summary of the movie goes like this: "After hundreds of hours of planning and production, Michael Ninn has coordinated the power of three separate edit bays to begin the process of bringing his vision of Catherine to life.
Capitalizing on the color depth and contrast ratios only available when shooting on Film, Michael has set his sights on tying European scope and drama with Los Angeles aloofness and chic. In a story of a woman wondering where the love went in her life, where guardian angels can take on bizarre and grotesque shapes, Michael opens a breathtaking depth of experience.
Raw sexuality in our genre remains the most common (and achievable) of goals. However, with the pure combination of this raw sexuality and a much more difficult to capture raw emotion, magic happens. No director can honestly say how the public will ultimately respond to their art, but the good ones remain true to their vision regardless of the critical consequences. If passion brings all feelings to the surface, be very careful where you choose to scratch on this one."

Eddie as mentioned jammed at the private House Of Flowers party, accompanied by keyboardist and producer Patrick Leonard on keyboards.

Interestingly, no sign of Alex Van Halen at the party and it sounds like drum machines being used on those 2 new instrumentals. Although I sought one, there has been no official statement about Eddie's involvement in the aforementioned movie or future plans

New Megadeth on the way...

    from melodicrock.com

    DAVE MUSTAINE PREPARING VINTAGE MEGADETH:
From FMQB: "Megadeth is eyeing a Halloween release for its next album, United Abominations, and Dave Mustaine says the new material will remind fans of vintage Megadeth. "If I was to say what time this record would have came out, I would have said some time before [1990's] Rust in Peace or sometime after [1992's] Countdown to Extinction," Mustaine told MTV.com. "The critics called [The System Has Failed] a return to form, but this is even more so." Mustaine will announce the lineup for his second annual Gigantour Metal festival tour shortly."

Pink Floyds' Syd Barrett Dies

    From melodicrock.com

PINK FLOYD'S SYD BARRETT DIES:Sad news for Pink Floyd fans. One of the many news items onlien today regarding band founder Syd Barrett is:
Syd Barrett, founder of Pink Floyd, dies. By JILL LAWLESS, Associated Press Writer.
LONDON - Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.
The spokeswoman - who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement - confirmed media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death. Barrett had suffered from diabetes for many years.
Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright, and wrote many of the band's early songs. The group's jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and the 1967 album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" - largely written by Barrett, who also played guitar - was a commercial and critical hit.
However, Barrett suffered from mental instability, exacerbated by his use of LSD. His behavior grew increasingly erratic, and he left the group in 1968 - five years before the release of Pink Floyd's most popular album, Dark Side of the Moon. He was replaced by David Gilmour.
Barrett released two solo albums - "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett" - but soon withdrew from the music business altogether.
He spent much of the rest of his life living quietly in his hometown of Cambridge, England, where he was a familiar figure, often seen cycling or walking to the corner store.
Despite his brief career, Barrett's fragile, wistful songs influenced many musicians, from David Bowie — who covered the Barrett track "See Emily Play" - to the other members of Pink Floyd, who recorded the album Wish You Were Here as a tribute to their troubled bandmate.
The band spokeswoman said a small, private funeral would be held.
    R.I.P. Syd.

Rockstar Supernova thoughts and first impressions...

Andrew from melodicrock.com pretty much echoes my sentiments, especially about how Rockstar INXS was more about finding a singer for a seasoned band...I like the crazy Nirvana singing gal, and I think the "band" does, too!!

    From melodicrock.com:

TALKING ROCKSTAR: SUPERNOVA:Spoiler Alert - for those that have not yet seen the show in their area...
Well, RockStar season 2 is underway and Supernova have seen what their "rockers" can do. After the first week, I'm not sure they will be able to do a whole lot! Yes, it's an enjoyable show, but the assembled cast cannot be the best 15 vocalists they could find - surely? No.

First a few general thoughts on the new show. The Inxs season worked as well as it did because they were a seasoned band and the personalities within the band were well established.
With Supernova, the guys are still getting to know each other in that tight knit band environment and I'm not yet sure they have worked each other out. I felt like each of the guys - Gilby Clark, Tommy Lee and Jason Newstead - were trying too hard to be cooler than each other. Both in the studio scenes and on the live shows.
Then there is Dave "that was insane dude" Navarro. He is what he is I guess, but he's shtick is pretty limited and gets old quickly - especially after an entire season of it last year.
I do think Tommy Lee is extremely likable though. He has been through it all and seen it all and is very media savvy (having been in it so often!) He has an engaging personality and I like the fact he continually acknowledged the crowd.
Butch Walker came across as the most natural of the whole lot of them, and will be the person I will take most interest in through the season.

Of all the talent gathered, I do have to wonder who is running the audition process and what they are trying to achieve with the candidates gathered. The majority has a similar kinda look and even sound similar. Not as much variety as last year, but just as Season 1, I think there are only about 5 or 6 genuine contenders in the whole bunch. The rest are just there for entertainment purposes (both good and bad) and for a little spice (bitching and rivalry) and sadly, something for the TV audience to look at (both male and female) and hopefully form some kind of allegiance to. Initial ratings suggest they might struggle with this...
After the first performance show, I would have sent at least 5 home...it is plain and clear that the majority have no hope of fitting into what this band needs. I was surprised and somewhat intrigued to see that the 7 females gathered were head and shoulders above the guys as far as vocal chops and stage personality.
Going into the show I questioned whether a female would ever win, but perhaps that is the desire of the band or at least the producers this year. The guys just didn't compete as strongly and to see that the bottom 3 were all male was no surprise.

It was no surprise to see the song selections. Plenty of classic rock to keep Joe average happy at home and then some modern rock to appeal to the youth audience and keep ol' Dave Navarro happy.
And yes, there was a Nirvana song - watch for one each bloody week - no REM yet though!
I think just about everyone - especially the guys - over sung their tracks this week. All were trying to impress right off the bat, but not many succeeded.

So who did the best job?
Storm - Pinball Wizard - big personality and big eyeballs. Ok vocals, but good presence, should be fun to watch.
Toby - Knocking On Heaven's Door - the Aussie boy did ok. Nothing huge, but typical Aussie pub rock vocals.
Dilana - Lithium - one of the nuttier stage performances I have seen in a long long time. But it got your attention and when she wasn't "moving", her raw vocal had intensity.
Dana - I'm The Only One - mature performance for a 22 year old and another to watch. Very commercial look and sound.

    Who bombed?
Matt - Yello - Who the hell picked that song for this show? C'mon...
    Magni - Satisfaction - horrible…an arrogant performance.
Jenny - How You Remind Me - another horrid performance.
Phil - Cult of Personality. He was lucky to get away with that. Might go home next...
Chris - Roxanne - WTF? Worst of the night. Has to do way better than that next week.
Zayra - Bring Me To Life - not much life in this performance...
Ryan - Iris - strong vocal, one of the few for the night, but a little bit nice and a little over the top. Not the right vibe for the song, but might be one to watch.

Eliminated - Matt….too bad, I thought he was third worst for the night and unlucky to go first up. I liked his performance of Duran Duran's Planet Earth. A good voice for modern rock/pop, but there was no way he'd make Top 5, simply being the wrong style for this show.

First week in a nutshell - average. Ok show, ok performances overall, but noting to get really amazed about and perhaps an indication that the whole season might just be something worth viewing, but not entirely memorable.
Hard to make such a call after only 1 show, so time will tell.

For the record - those that have a genuine shot at getting somewhere on the show: Storm, Ryan, Toby, Josh, Dilana and Dana and maybe Lukas if he can do something other than punk. The rest can go home now :)

Motleys' Vince Neil falls off stage...

    From melodicrock.com

WHOOPDIE-DOO FOR VINCE NEIL:Blabbermouth has this online earier today in regards to Vince Neil's interesting stage "performance" last weekend:
Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil spoke to Tara Merrin of the Calgary Sun about his disastrous solo concert last Friday (June 30) in Tampa, Florida when he got so drunk he fell off the stage.
Ex-Motley Crue singer John Corabi, who is touring with Ratt, saved the day when he came on stage and performed with Neil, who admitted his words, at that point, were mostly just mumblings.
"I was pretty buzzed. I tripped, fell off (the stage) — sometimes it happens," he told the Calgary Sun.
"But, this isn't a tour. This is just me going out and having fun and sometimes, yeah, I drink a little too much. That's just the way it is."
And as for those not-so-flattering reviews of that show, Neil says after 25 years of being bashed in the media for everything from drug addiction to a fatal car wreck that landed him in jail, he couldn't care less.
That's because, he adds, no matter what has been said about him, he continues to lead one of the biggest rock bands in the world.
"I just finished 185 shows with Motley Crue, so one show in Tampa where I drank a little too much — whoopdie-doo.
"I am still doing my shows and I'm going to record another Motley Crue album and then be back out on tour — by then nobody's really going to care anymore."
    Read more at www.calgarysun.com .

Whoopdie-doo?? Vince, take some advice dude! When you get a prime chance to do damage control after such an embarrassing event, don't come off like a complete a**hole!

JOURNEY SINGER REPLACED!!!

    From melodicrock.com

JOURNEY: STEVE AUGERI RETURNS HOME - JEFF SCOTT SOTO FLIES IN:
Steve Augeri has stepped down as lead vocalist for Journey on their current tourand has returned home. This follows recent reports of vocal problems. His last show for this tour was in Raleigh, NC on Tuesday night.
During recent shows he has struggled with his voice and as I understand, he was aware before the show that this would be his last performance of this tour.
Although plagued with problems from the outset of the show, Steve handled himself with dignity and grace and has to be applauded for his contribution to the band and the manner in which he has handled himself.
Jeff Scott Soto, Neal Schon's bandmate in Soul SirkUS has flown in to meet up with the rest of the band and will make his debut Friday night in Bristow, VA.

A statement has been prepared by Journey management:

JOURNEY FORCED TO MAKE LEAD SINGER CHANGE ON NATIONWIDE TOUR

"Jeff Scott Soto to assume JOURNEY lead singer duties starting on July 7th in Bristow, VA due to Steve Augeri throat infection.
Due to a chronic throat infection, Journey's lead singer, Steve Augeri, has been forced to leave the band's current nationwide tour with Def Leppard. Jeff Scott Soto, who has previously performed with Journey guitarist Neal Schon, will assume the band's lead singer duties starting with the July 7th show in Bristow, VA. Steve Augeri's condition will be closely monitored by his physician to determine when he may be able to rejoin the tour.
According to Journey, "Steve's been suffering with an acute throat condition since before we kicked off the tour with Def Leppard. We were hoping he'd be in well condition to handle the rigors of the road but unfortunately it appears to be a chronic condition requiring total voice rest. We all wish Steve a speedy recovery."
For the latest tour dates, please visit www.journeymusic.com

    --------------------------
Steve Augeri sitting out this tour is another chapter in this band's long history.
Augeri was recruited into the Journey ranks in 1998 after Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain decided they wanted to move forward with the band without signature member Steve Perry. Augeri had to work with a fanbase that was polarized by the idea of a Perry-less Journey. There were those that remained loyal to Perry, but Steve worked hard at winning fans over and did so with his natural charm and likeability.

Steve Augeri's is today regarded as much for being the 'good guy' as he is for being the 'new singer' and he now has a passionate and loyal following of his own. He truly is a nice guy and someone that has made time for fans and worked hard at overcoming being known as 'the guy that replaced Steve Perry.'
Augeri's contribution to the band to date has forever been captured on the acclaimed, and quite superb, Arrival album and last year's more diverse Generations release.

Steve and the band as a whole has had a grueling tour schedule to adhere to over the last few years. Steve has been suffering vocal problems since the outset of this current tour and no one can blame him or the band for this decision. A solution was needed sooner rather than later, especially with so many dates still to come.
Steve has had a documented history of throat problems and one can only hope that on this occasion he overcomes these issues and returns to full strength.
In the near future fans will be able to appreciate Steve at his very best when Tall Stories unveil their album of lost tracks from the early 1990s.

Congratulations to Jeff Scott Soto for being chosen to fill the prestigious role as vocalist for one of this genre's most loved acts. Jeff is one of the hardest working singers on the planet. His work ethic and dedication to his live performance is unmatched. I should know…I toured with Jeff for 2 weeks in 2004 and was simply amazed at what went into every show. I have seen Jeff live 11 times now and haven't seen a better performer on stage.
His energy is undying and his stage persona totally engaging. I know Journey fans will be saddened by Steve Augeri not completing this tour, but Jeff will continue the legacy with pride.

New U.F.O. cd on the horizon...
Wednesday, July 05, 2006
    from melodicrock.com

UFO GET OUT THEIR MONKEY PUZZLE FOR FANS IN SEPTEMBER:

UFO will release their brand new studio album The Monkey Puzzle via SPV on September 25. This from the record label:
London, Paris, Tokyo, New York there are few international metropolises where the British rock legends, UFO, haven't filled major venues. There can be no doubt that this band enjoy performing their music, combining the present with their legendary past night after night and proving that they are likely to add a few more chapters to the chronicles of rock history. The most recent stage of their long-standing career has been the release of their Showtime DVD and double live CD, recorded during their shows in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland last year. The original members, Phil Mogg (vocals), Pete Way (bass), Paul Raymond (guitar, keyboards) and recently returned drummer Andy Parker, are scheduled to start their extensive world tour in October 2006. Parker was part of the UFO line-up that performed the group's debut show in the late Sixties and has returned to replace Jason Bonham, who left to join Foreigner. Also on board is their accomplished guitarist Vinnie Moore, who has been part of the permanent line-up since the studio album, You Are Here (2004).
UFO's world tour is due to start mid October 2006 and will be the first since spring 2004, when the group travelled Europe and went on to make a brief detour to the States. New songs from their latest studio album The Monkey Puzzle, due to be recorded in March and April at Tommy Newton's Area 51 Studios, will also be part of the set list this autumn. Newton already produced You Are Here and also recorded the concerts for Showtime. The press praised both releases enthusiastically, were impressed by the fresh and dynamic compositions on You Are Here and stressed the musicians' enthusiastic performance that is omnipresent on Showtime.
Since the beginning of the Seventies, UFO have been among the most important international rock acts. Successful albums such as Phenomenon (1974), Force It (1975) and No Heavy Pettin' (1976) featuring the hits Doctor, Doctor, Rock Bottom or Lights Out brought their worldwide breakthrough. Their 1979 live album, Strangers In The Night, was one of the best live recordings of all time. Their 2004 studio album, You Are Here, was voted among the ten best albums of all time by the British Classic Rock magazine, and Showtime was praised as a worthy successor to Strangers In The Night.
    UFO live:
    22.07. D - Burg Herzberg Festival
    26.07. UK-Falmouth - Princess Pavillions
    27.07. UK-Frome - Cheese & Grain
