Wisconsin Rapids Man Charged with Attempted Homicide Now Found Competent to Stand Trial

Tuesday, February 27th, 2024 -- 2:00 PM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A Wisconsin Rapids man accused of attempted homicide is now competent to stand trial, according to a new evaluation by a mental health professional.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Tommy Ehrisman was in a Wood County courtroom on Monday where he agreed that he is ready to aid in his defense as he faces charges of attempted homicide and strangulation or suffocation in a domestic abuse setting.

Investigators say he tried to suffocate a woman with a pillow. But as he was holding the pillow over her face, he stopped and told her to call for help. He told officers he had been planning the incident for two days and was also having thoughts of self-harm.

The 66-year-old was found incompetent for trial last fall, putting the court case on hold. Though at the time doctors said he could be competent within a year. A scheduling conference was set for April 1st. Ehrisman has pled not guilty to the charges and faces up to life in prison if found guilty.
