Medford School Bus Drivers Add Dash Cams to Their Buses

Monday, February 5th, 2024 -- 11:00 AM

(Veonna King, WAOW) When the school bus arms come out drivers on the road are supposed to stop, but Medford bus drivers say that's not the case.

According to Veonna King with WAOW, Krug's Bus Service has been a bus service for the Medford Area School district for years. Drivers for the company say there have been too many close calls when it comes to kids safety.

"When we initiate our lights whether it be the amber or the red we’re not seeing drivers slow down. We’re not seeing them pay attention to kids standing by the road and when the red light comes on many are going right straight through lights at highway speed," said Krug's bus driver, Debra Koncel.

In an effort to teach drivers a lesson, Krug's drivers have decided to install dash cams to catch people in the act. "It'll show the vehicle coming at me and running the red lights and my dash cam actually has a mic on it, so I can verbally say the license plate as a vehicle is coming at me," said Krug's bus driver, Brian Moberg.

Koncel explains that the safety of kids is the main concern and they just want people to understand the consequences of their actions. "We’re just concerned that one of our kids, and I call them our kids when they're on our bus because they're my kids, one of our kids is gonna get seriously injured or worse," said Koncel.
