State Department of Justice Investigating Fatal Shooting During a Police Welfare Check in Rothschild

(Chris Conley, WSAU) The state’s Department of Justice is investigating a fatal shooting during a police welfare check in Rothschild.

According to Chris Conley with WSAU, the DOJ says around 9:46pm on Wednesday night police were called to a residence on the 1000 block of Urban Street. Officers from Rothschild, Kronenwetter and Everest Metro PD responded.

When they entered the residence a male subject ran into a bathroom with a firearm. A single shot was heard as the man turned the gun on himself. Officers attempted life-saving procedures, but the man could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

No shots were fired by responding officers. All officers at the scene were wearing body cameras. The state DOJ will investigate. One officer is on administrative leave under agency policy. No names have been released.
